JPs as PDFs!

Dear Jerusalem Perspective Online readers,

I am happy to announce that all back issues of JP are now available in electronic format. And they are half the price of print issues! Purchase one or all 56 back issues of Jerusalem Perspective magazine as downloadable PDF files!

Here are some of the advantages of purchasing JP back issues in PDF format:

  • The ability to view articles in their original magazine layout, with photographs and graphics. Many of the print magazine's illustrations have not yet been added to the electronic versions of the articles.

  • You also will be able to view the original ancient words that appeared in these articles. Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek text could not be preserved when the magazine switched to an electronic format.

  • The ability to read ALL of the Jerusalem Perspective magazine articles. You will be able to view articles that have not yet been put on line, such as the full commentary on the Rich Young Ruler story (a double issue).

  • The "Letters to the Editor" section of magazine issues has not yet been made available on the JP Web site. In PDF format you will be able to read the many valuable responses of scholars such as Shmuel Safrai to readers' letters.

  • Photos in the new PDF-formatted issues can be manipulated and saved.

Perhaps you would like to download an issue or two of the new PDF back issues to sample their advantages.

To sample a forty-page, full-color issue in PDF format ($5.00), I recommend you download Issue #54 (Jul.-Sept. 1998), the Bethsaida Issue, with its long and beautifully illustrated article by Mendel Nun on the identification of the biblical Bethsaida; and with Shmuel Safrai's comments on the Jewish population of the Golan (Gaulan) and the northeastern and eastern coasts of the Sea of Galilee; and David Bivin's comments about the possibility that the Gergesene demoniac (Lk. 8:38) was Jewish. You can read a detailed description of each of the articles in Issue #54.

To sample a sixteen-page, two-color issue in PDF format ($3.25), I recommend you download Issue #40 (Sept./Oct. 1993), which contains Shmuel Safrai's "The Place of Women in First-century Synagogues"; Randall Buth's "That Small-fry Herod Antipas, or When a Fox Is Not a Fox" [Lk. 13:32]; Chana Safrai's "Jesus' Jewish Parents"; and Joseph Frankovic's "Pieces to the Synoptic Puzzle: Papias and Luke 1:1-4." You can read a detailed description of each of the articles in Issue #40.

To sample a four-page, two-color issue in PDF format ($1.00), I recommend you download Issue #2 (Nov. 1987), which contains the articles: "Semitic Background to the Nain Story" [Lk. 7:11-17]; "Evidence for Jesus' Judean Ministry" [Lk. 7:17; War 4:511-513]; and "'Prophet' as a Messianic Title" [Lk. 1:32; 7:16; 9:35; Deut. 18:15; Eccl. Rabbah 1:9; Acts 3:22; 7:35, 37; Mechilta on Exod. 13:19; Tanhuma, Toledot 20; Num. 12:7; 1 Macc. 14:41; Heb. 3:1-6]. You can read a detailed description of each of the articles in Issue #2.

    Sincerely,

    David Bivin
