Ariel Sharon Elected Prime Minister

Israel's newly-elected prime minister, Ariel Sharon is attempting to form a new government. The new government will be composed of the leftist, socialist-leaning Labor Party, the rightist, hard-line Likud Party, the Shas Party and several smaller parties. With Labor aboard, the hawkish Sharon is assured of stability, that is, a government that will last its full term.

New BBC Documentary about Jesus

A computer-generated image of Jesus' face was created by a forensic artist based on the 2,000-year-old skull of a Jewish man discovered in Israel. "The result is a dark-skinned, curly-haired man with a round, robust face and a stout nose," a reconstruction that challenges the fair-skinned, fine-featured Jesus images common in western civilization.

Seder with Family

A visitor to Israel last Saturday night might have been puzzled by seeing the streets heavy with traffic, especially since it was already one o'clock in the morning. The reason was that last night was the first night of the annual week-long Passover festival celebrating the Jewish exodus from Egypt thousands of years ago, and people were returning home after taking part in a Passover Seder.

A Taste of Our Life in Israel

This year Josa and I were honored that Roy Brown stayed a few days at our home. I encouraged him to relax a bit at the most tranquil spot that I know: the hot springs of En-Gedi.

Joy Comes in the Morning!

April here in Israel was a month of mixed emotions, a mixture of joy and sorrow. There were two major commemorations: Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 19) and Memorial Day (April 25); and two major joyous celebrations: Pesach, or Passover (April 8-14), and Independence Day (April 26).

Lag ba-Omer: The 33rd of the "Sheaf"

Lag ba-Omer is to Christians one of the least-known and least-understandable of Jewish holidays. And small wonder; this minor holiday is shrouded in the Jewish mysticism of the Middle Ages.

Kechol Hagoyim: "Then We Will Be Like All the Other Nations" (1 Sam 8:20)

With a population of just a bit more that six million, Israel is a vibrant, modern state with all the accompanying social ills. During the past month, 57 Israeli citizens were killed in traffic accidents, the highest monthly total in five year.

The Angel Who Has Delivered Me From Harm

Horst Krueger, Jerusalem Perspective's representative in Aachen, Germany, has suggested to me that Genesis 48:16 may be part of the background to a phrase found in the Lord's Prayer. I believe that Horst has found an important parallel to the words of Jesus.

A Milestone in Halvor Ronning's Life: Cause for Reflection

With the creators of the Jerusalem School, Lindsey and Flusser, now gone, and the oldest of their students approaching the end of their productive years, it is time to take stock and carefully plan our next steps. It is not a time for pessimism, but neither is it a time for ignoring the reality of our situation.

To Be, or Not to Be, in the Driver's Seat?

At this point, God certainly had my attention. I prayed fervently and recited to myself Scriptures that I had memorized such as the Shema, the Lord's Prayer, the 23rd Psalm -- especially, the words, "Even when I pass through a deep and dangerous gorge, I'm not afraid [of what may happen to me] because you are with me...Nothing but good things will happen to me..."

Even This Is for the Good

There is a phrase that Jews have said in the face of tragedy for a very long time: "Gam zo le tovah." It means, "Even this is for the good."
