The Stakes Are High

As Rabbi Tarfon (130 A.D.) used to say, "The day is short and the work is great, but the workers are lazy; however, the wages are high since the owner is in a hurry [to get the harvest into the barn]" (m. Avot 2:15). Yes, God is urgent to accomplish his work.

Taking Stock

This would be the perfect time to take stock, to look back at what the Lord has done, count our blessings and recount our vision of what the Lord may still want us to do.

A History of the Intersection of JP, JS, & Brian Becker

Like many, I was intrigued by the possibility that Jesus' words could somehow have been corroded during the early years of Christianity by various entities. I was embarking on a whole new fascination of my Savior.

Maccabi Tel Aviv Wins European Basketball Championship for Fourth Time

On Saturday night Israel's most famous basketball club, Maccabi Tel Aviv, overwhelmed Skipper Bologna of Italy in the finals of the Euroleague. This was Maccabi's fourth title, having also won in 1977, 1981 and 2001. Tel Aviv beat Skipper Bologna by 44 points (118-74), the highest winning margin ever in an European cup final... Maccabi made an incredible 71% of its two-point shots (28 of 38) and 61% of its threes (14 of 23)... No one dreamed that the score would be so lopsided. However, the 10,000 devoted Maccabi fans in attendance at Yad Eliyahu Arena were there to make sure the trophy stayed in Israel. Skipper, obviously rattled by the partisan crowd, eventually fell apart completely... By the second half of the game nearly half (46.8 percent) of the households in the country, were tuned into Israel's TV Channel One... Controlled by 3,500 police officers, security was tight for the event....

Studying the Gospels Synoptically

If you are a serious student who wishes to engage in careful, analytical study of the Gospels, you'll need a few special tools in your study tool box. Obviously, tool number one is a Bible translation that you can readily understand and one that gives a reasonably literal rendering of the Greek texts of the New Testament. Having several translations handy as you study is even more helpful. A concordance and a good Greek lexicon are indispensible, too. But, if there is one tool that facilitates Gospel studies more than any other study aid...

Reflections at 65

On July the 20th I celebrated my 65th birthday. Does that mean I'm "old"? Only someone who has reached my age knows how young I feel! It seems to me as if only a year has passed since I arrived in Israel at the age of 24.

Jesus' Post-resurrection Sayings

In response to a provocative question ("Did anyone of the Jerusalem School discuss the possibility of verses 21-23 [Matt 10] being in a 'post-resurrection' context?") that Steve Branch posted in our Discussion Forum, I have written a long response. To...
